Etude House Play 101 Pencils Simple Makeup Look

Happy great Sunday! I’ve been raving about the Etude House Play 101 Pencils for weeks now, but haven’t posted any FOTD featuring Play 101 pencils yet. Or any FOTD at all.

Lol! Anyways, today I want to share with you this simple makeup look that I’ve created using the Play 101 Pencils.

Simple Makeup Look

For the base makeup, I used non-Etude House products. Sorry! I applied Laneige BB Cushion SPF50+ PA+++ in No. 13 True Beige all over my face.

Then used NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard for my undereye area. Also used it to conceal my dark spots and blemishes, and also applied a little amount on my lips.

How to apply Etude House Play 101 Pencils in 9 easy steps

Now, on to the good part. From here on, it’s all Etude House Play 101 Pencils!

Step 1

Use Play 101 Pencil 41 to carefully line and color the eye brows. Do a straighter line and avoid any arches. This helps in creating a younger appearance.

Step 2

For a fresh wash of color, use Play 101 Pencil 27 on the entire eye lid area. I forgot to mention in the photo above that I also lined the outer 2/3 of my lower lash line with the same pencil.

Step 3

Tightline the upper lash line using Play 101 Pencil 1. I just do a zigzag motion along the roots of my lashes.

Step 4

To further brighten the eye area, use Play 101 Pencil 8 along the waterline. It can also be used for the undereye area and as a concealer for blemishes and dark spots.

Step 5

Carefully curl the lashes and apply 2 coats of mascara or a great pair of false lashes. Oops! I forgot that I also used non-Etude House products for this part.

Step 6

For more drama, apply Play 101 Pencil 28 along the inner 1/3 of the lower lash line and also near the tear duct area.

Step 7

Highlight the nose bridge, upper cheekbone area and chin using Play 101 Pencil 4.

For some color on the cheeks, use Play 101 Pencil 16. I used a little too much here because I wanted the color to really show up in the pictures. But you get the idea.

Step 8

My favorite part. The lips! Because I wanted to keep the look simple, I used Play 101 Pencil 25 on the entire lips instead of doing a gradation lip effect.

If you want to know more about how to do gradation lips, you may check out my simple tutorial (click here) on how to easily do it.

Step 9

Etude House Play 101 Pencils 4 and 8 and 13 and 50

Etude House Play 101 Pencils have been released last year. With 50 pencils in the line, there is a wide variety of colors to choose from. They are so versatile because you can use them in so many different ways: lip liner, lip gloss, lip color, blush, concealer, bronzer, highlighter, eye base, eye liner, eye shadow or brow liner. The Etude House Play 101 Pencils come in 5 different textures and finishes: creamy, glitter, shimmering, matte and glossy.

What Etude House says:

☆ No smudging, clean make up waterproof type
☆ Clear color with vivid application
☆ Creamy: Silky fit clear color
☆ Matte: Soft application but powdery finish, For eye base, contour shadow, concealer and eyebrows
☆ Glossy: Moisture texture with gloss, for lips, blusher and wide areas
☆ Shimmering: Small pearl particles giving soft shine
☆ Glitter: Particles with big glitter pearl providing bling bling colorful make up look

Etude House Play 101 Pencils 4, 8, 13 and 50
I first bought Etude House Play 101 Pencils in shades 12 and 16 (reviewed here), then went back for shades 3, 15 and 25 (reviewed here). I got really smitten with these pencils that I vowed to collect them all. All the colors that appeal to me, that is. I have also recently reviewed shades 27 and 41 here. Now, I’m reviewing my recently purchased Etude House Play 101 Pencils in shades 4, 8, 13 and 50.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 4

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 4

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #4 is a very light pink with silver glitters. As it has a glitter finish, it is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner. It has a smooth texture and it glides easily without tugging on the eyes. The glitters are not too chunky therefore the finish is very pretty and there are minimal, if any, fallouts.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 4 Swatches

Even without a primer, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #4 didn’t smudge. It dries quite fast, so you’ll have to be quick if you need to blend it before it completely sets. On my oily lids, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #4 didn’ t crease at all and was surprisingly long-lasting.

I love using Etude House Play 101 Pencil #4 as a light wash of color for the entire eye lid area, as well as on the undereye area. It can also be used just as a highlight to the inner corner of the eye as well as the inner 1/3 of the undereye area. This can help brighten the overall look of your eye makeup. It lasts around 6 to 7 hours on me and it was very easy to remove using an eye makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 8

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 8

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #8 has a matte finish and it is recommended for use as a base or as an eye shadow. It is a warm-toned light beige that can be used as an eyeshadow base. I have only used it as a concealer though, and I must say that it really delivers.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 8 Swatches

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #8 is very easy to use as a concealer. Before I bought this, my favorite concealer was NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. But that one is a hassle to apply especially because I don’t apply it directly and still use a brush. With the Etude House Play 101 Pencil #8, I can apply it directly on my dark spots, blend a bit, and it’s done! It also applies smoothly and is quite pigmented. It dries fairly fast and is also long-lasting. It lasts around 8 to 9 hours on me, which is usually until the time I remove my entire makeup.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 13

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 13

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #13 is a bright orange with gold glitters. Even though it has a glitter finish, it is recommended for use not just as an eyeshadow but also as a blush or even for the lips. At first, I had only used it on the lips. But later tested it on my cheeks as well, then finally used it as an eyeshadow. Play 101 Pencil #13 looks really cool however I use it.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 13 Swatches

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #13 has a smooth texture and it glides easily without tugging on the lips. The glitters are not too chunky therefore the finish is very pretty. It is a shimmery golden orange on the lips that will look great as a highlight for the center of the lips to add dimension and fullness. When used for the whole lips, it looks glamorous and reminds me of those MAC lipsticks that seem golden bronze on the lips. However, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #13 is a much wearable color than the MAC ones. If you’re planning on wearing it as a full-on lipcolor, I recommend applying a lipbalm underneath it because it tends to be a bit drying due to the micro glitters. It sets quickly and lasts around 4 to 5 hours on my lips.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 13 swatches

When used lightly as a blush, it looks gorgeous as well. The micro shimmers do not accentuate the pores and application is a breeze. I just draw a few lines where I want my blush, then quickly and gently blend. It only lasts around 4 to 5 hours on my cheeks, but that’s probably because I only apply a little amount.

I love using Etude House Play 101 Pencil #13 as an eyeshadow. Much like Play 101 Pencil #27, it applies smoothly and doesn’t tug on my eyes. It dries quite fast, so you’ll have to be quick if you need to blend it before it completely sets. On my oily lids, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #13 didn’ t crease at all and was surprisingly long-lasting. It lasts around 7 to 8 hours on me and it was very easy to remove using an eye makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 50

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 50

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #50 has a creamy finish and it is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner. It is a dark brown with no shimmers at all. Because of this, I like using it as an eyeliner or tight liner. I love glittery and shimmery eyeshadows but for eyeliners, I often prefer matte, creamy or non-glittery liners. I still use glittery eyeliners sometimes, though.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 50

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #50 applies smoothly and glides easily along my upper waterline. It is very pigmented so I don’t have to repeat the process just to make sure that the color is really evident. Before it dries, it smudges easily so it can also be used for smokey eye makeup. Once it dries though, you’ll be surprised that it doesn’t budge at all. Etude House 101 Pencil #50 dries fairly fast and is very long-lasting even on my oily lids.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 50 Swatches

For daytime makeup, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #50 is my current favorite tightliner. I also sometimes wing out my eyeliner for added drama. It lasts around 7 to 8 hours on me and it was also very easy to remove using a regular eye makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils 4, 8, 13, 50 Conclusion

The Etude House Play 101 Pencils come with a built-in sharpener at the other end of the pencil. To get more product out, all you have to do is twist the colored part at the end of the pencil where the sharpener is housed. Then use the hidden sharpener if you need to sharpen the tip.

I bought these Play 101 Pencils from Etude House in Robinsons Manila for Php348 each. These are really great products that are so versatile and super easy to use. I highly recommend for you to check them out if you haven’t yet.

Yesterday was the last day of the Etude House Hello New Year Sale, so I was able to buy 8 more shades at 20% off. I gave 1 to my sister-in-law who visited earlier today. She was so ecstatic when I showed her the Play 101 Pencils and told her how versatile these pencils are. At only 18, she is still just a newbie at makeup and was intrigued when I showed her how to do tight lining. So I gave her my newly purchased shade 50 so she can practice tight lining her eyes. It was supposed to be my backup, but I’ll just buy another one. I’m just glad to have made her really happy.

I have been collecting Etude House Play 101 Pencils ever since I found out about them. Etude House had released the Play 101 Pencils last year. With 50 pencils in the line, there is a wide variety of colors to choose from. I first bought Etude House Play 101 Pencil shades 12 and 16 (reviewed here), then went back for shades 3, 15 and 25 (reviewed here). Next were 27 and 41 (reviewed here), 4, 8, 13 and 50 (reviewed here), and the black shades 1 and 2 (reviewed here). These pencils are so addicting that I want to collect them all. I bought 8 more Play 101 Pencils during the Etude House Hello New Year Sale, so I was able to buy them at 20% off.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 has a glossy finish. It is recommended for use on the lips, as a blush or as an eye shadow. I don’t feel like using it as an eyeshadow because it’s too much of a “red eye” for me. I have tried it as a blush and it looks alright, but I still prefer using it on my lips. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 is a true red with a slight warm undertone.

When lightly applied on the cheeks and then blended, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 imparts a rosy red tint. However, I still prefer pink and coral blushes, so even though it was very easy to apply and blend, it’s just not for me. Or, at least, not for my cheeks. I like the coral shade Etude House Play 101 Pencil #15 better as a blush. But in terms of finish and longevity, #15 is just the same as #22. Since they both have a glossy finish, there is a bit of shine on the cheeks which makes me appear a little bit more oily. They also tend to fade faster on the cheeks. In the arm swatch below, I blended it just a little bit so the color will still be very much evident. But, you get the idea of how it will look on the cheeks.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 feels really creamy and smooth. It glides easily without tugging on the lips. It doesn’t feel like a regular gloss once applied, but there is still a bit of shine. It’s more like a satin sheen than a glossy finish. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 feels light on the lips and does not accentuate dry flakes and patches. However, I would still recommend exfoliating the lips and applying a good, moisturizing lip balm beforehand. It’s not drying, but is also not hydrating.

As you can see in the swatches above and below, Etude House Play 101 Pencil #22 is quite pigmented. Even those with pigmented lips can get away with not using a concealer or lip base underneath. It stays on my lips for 4 to 5 hours. After eating and drinking, it leaves a little bit of stain, but not really enough not to feel the need to reapply it.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #42

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #42 has a matte finish. It is recommended for use as an eye shadow, eye liner or for the eye brows. It is a cool-toned, grayish brown that is lighter and less brown when compared to Etude House Play 101 Pencil #41. It has a smooth and creamy texture and it glides easily along the eyebrows. Because of its texture, it can also be used much like a colored brow mascara.

I believe that Etude House Play 101 Pencil #42 had been really intended for use as an eyebrow pencil because of it’s color. In the Etude House Play 101 Pencil color chart, only #41 and #42 are shades that can be used for the eyebrows. It can also be used for a little bit of shadowing/contouring if your skintone is lighter than its shade.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 42 Swatch

Etude House Play 101 Pencils 22 42 and 46 Swatches on arms

In the arm swatch above, I only smudged it a little bit. But you’ll notice how light the color is when used as an eyeshadow. It could be used as an eyeshadow base or for a natural makeup look, but I much prefer using it on my brows. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #42 is long-lasting and I get around 7 to 8 hours of wear time. It is also fairly easy to remove using a good makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46 has a glittery finish and is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner as well. It is a warm copper with gold micro glitters. It has a smooth texture and applies easily, but there is a bit of dragging on the lids. So I have to be careful and need to keep my eyelids taut while applying so I won’t experience any tugging with it. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46 sets quickly and I didn’t experience any fallouts.

The color of Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46 on the eyelids looks very natural. I thought it would be more bronze or golden, but it is not as overly dramatic. It can be used as a light wash of color on the entire lids, and can also be applied along the lower lash line. I also use it as a base for my other eye shadows.

My eye area is a bit dark, probably due to my constant rubbing of them. So, I do apply a little bit of foundation on my eye lids to make it blend with the rest of my face. But after a few hours, the foundation on my eye lids tend to crease. Even with loose powder and eye shadows applied on top of it. I found that applying a good eye base color after applying the foundation on the lids prevents my foundation from creasing. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46 is one such product that does this perfectly.

In the arm swatch above, you’ll notice how light and natural-looking it is. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #46 dries fast and sets pretty quickly. It also lasts a long time, around 6 to 8 hours on me and it was also very easy to remove with a good eye makeup remover.

The Etude House Play 101 Pencils come with a built-in sharpener at the other end of the pencil. To get more product out, all you have to do is twist the colored part at the end of the pencil where the sharpener is housed. Then use the hidden sharpener if you need to sharpen the tip.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils Black

I first bought Etude House Play 101 Pencil shades 12 and 16 (reviewed here), then went back for shades 3, 15 and 25 (reviewed here). Next were 27 and 41 (reviewed here) and 4, 8, 13 and 50 (reviewed here). These pencils are so addicting that I want to collect them all. I bought 8 more Play 101 Pencils during the Etude House Hello New Year Sale, so I was able to buy them at 20% off.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is a plain, intense black with a creamy finish. When I bought it, I thought it has a matte finish. But when I swatched it at home, I found that it has a creamy finish. It is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 has a smooth texture and it glides easily along the lash line. Just remember to keep your eyelids a little taut by gently pushing your temples/outer eye area a little bit up and outwards. This prevents tugging on the eyes and also helps you draw a straighter and more precise eye line.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils No 1 Black

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is like a kohl eyeliner which looks better when smudged. I have tried to use it without smudging/blending and just let it set on its own. I found that doing this makes it a little bit more prone to smudging after a while. Especially on oily lids like mine. The next time I used it, I immediately smudged it after application. It does dry quite fast so I had to quickly smudge it out before it set and dried completely. This second method works better for me, as I didn’t experience any smudging the whole time I wore it.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils No 1 Swatch

In the arm swatch above, I only smudged it a little bit. But you’ll notice how the color turns lighter when smudged, which would really look great for a smokey eye makeup look. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is long-lasting even on my oily lids and I don’t get raccoon eyes even after 5 hours of wearing it. It lasts around 5 to 7 hours and was fairly easy to remove using a good eye makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 has a glittery finish and it is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner as well. It is also an intense black, but it has silver micro glitters which makes it more glamorous and fun. It has a smooth texture and applies rather easily. Even without having to hold/push out my outer eye area, I don’t experience any tugging with it. The only thing I don’t like is some of the micro glitters falling out. But that can easily be cleaned up, so I don’t worry too much about fallouts, unless they get in my eyes.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils No 2 Black

I wouldn’t use Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 for the waterline, because the micro glitters might get in the eyes. My eyes turn red, like I’ve just cried for hours, when glitters do get in them. It doesn’t look good to have red eyes when you’re going out, so I’m really careful when working with glittery makeup. However, it looks great when applied along the outer lower lash line, and of course, on the upper lash line.

Etude House Play 101 Pencils No 2 Swatch

In the arm swatch above, I tried to smudge it immediately after drawing the line but was only able to smudge it a bit. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 dries fast and sets pretty quickly. It also lasts a long time, around 7 to 8 hours on me and it was also very easy to remove with an eye makeup remover.

The Etude House Play 101 Pencils come with a built-in sharpener at the other end of the pencil. To get more product out, all you have to do is twist the colored part at the end of the pencil where the sharpener is housed. Then use the hidden sharpener if you need to sharpen the tip.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #27

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #27 is a medium pink with gold glitters. As it has a glitter finish, it is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #27 has a smooth texture and it glides easily without tugging on the eyes. The glitters are not too chunky therefore the finish is very pretty and there are minimal, if any, fallouts.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #41

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #41 has a glittery finish as well and it is recommended for use as an eye shadow, eye liner or eyebrow pencil. It is a medium tan, almost ash brown with just a little amount of micro glitters.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil 41 Swatch

I believe that Etude House Play 101 Pencil #41 had been really intended for use as an eyebrow pencil because of its color. It also applies smoothly and really well on the brows. Etude House 101 Pencil #41 dries fairly fast and is also long-lasting.

In the photo below, I used Play 101 Pencil #41 to lightly line my eyebrows. It was able to coat the eyebrows in almost the same way as how brow mascaras do. It lasted around 7 to 8 hours on me and it was also very easy to remove using an eye makeup remover.

Final Thoughts

I know I look really garish and ghostly on the before pic. Especially because I had applied concealer on my lips. Even though this is just a simple makeup look, it still made my face appear alive. Lol!

I hope you enjoyed this simple makeup look that I’ve created using the Etude House Play 101 Pencils. Did you love it or hate it? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section!
