There are so many ways to take care of our face these days, and one of the most popular is with a face mask. Aside from being effective, one factor that led to its popularity is how simple it is to use. But how often should you use a face mask for oily skin?
If you already got yourself an effective face mask you can use with your oily skin like SK-II Facial Treatment Mask, it’s very tempting to put it on every day. You know that refreshingly smooth skin experience you get when you take off the mask? Who wouldn’t want to experience that all the time, right?
But let me say this upfront, though. You should not use your face mask daily. The ingredients are more potent than your daily cleanser or moisturizer. Read on and find out how frequently you should use one to make it both safe and effective for your face.
How Often to Use Face Mask for Oily Skin
Oily skin is very different from normal or dry skin. The most obvious is that oily skin produces, well, more oil, making your face look shiny and thick. Pores are also more visible because they’re enlarged and breakouts are very common due to excessive sebum.
This means you’ll need to choose specific ingredients on your face mask to make it more effective for your skin condition.
What Ingredients Should You Be Looking For?
Although not required, here are some ingredients that you will want your skincare products to have:
Hyaluronic Acid. When you want to keep your skin hydrated without clogging the pores.
Glycolic Acid. A gentle exfoliator that removes dead skin cells that can clog pores.
Salicylic Acid. Prevents acne breakouts by removing excess oil and dirt from your pores.
How Often to use it
These ingredients don’t need to be all present on a single face mask. While salicylic acid is the most important for treating oily skin, hyaluronic acid can be very beneficial in preventing dryness caused by salicylic acid. Some natural ingredients can also keep your skin hydrated.
Personally, though, I don’t mind the ingredients. As long as it’s working for me, without causing any skin troubles, then it’s all good! But, of course, I don’t settle for anything below average. That’s why I always take my time to test any product that I’m putting on my face.
However, even if you have the best face mask that has proven to be effective in treating your oily skin, you’re not supposed to use it every day. Masks specifically formulated for oily and acne-prone skin usually has ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Regularly exposing your skin to these chemicals can be toxic and irritating.
As a general rule, you should do your routine 1 to 2 times per week only.
Like with any skincare regimen, you need to do it in moderation or as prescribed. You’re giving time for your skin to naturally heal without choking it with too many chemicals or processes.
As a matter of fact, I don’t find this restricting at all. It’s something to look forward to every weekend as I spend time having my own spa treatment at home.
How Frequently Should You Use A Face Sheet Mask?
Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask Sheets
Your favorite K-Beauty product is probably the Korean face sheet masks, right?
They’re cheap, easy-to-use, and requires almost no preparation at all. You just tear the package, pull out the mask sheet and prop it on your freshly-washed and toned face. There are so many variants to choose from, you’ll probably end up buying (or hoarding) a lot of them. That’s a common occurrence because these sheets are very appealing, as well as affordable.
Most Korean face sheet masks have natural ingredients that make it safe and effective. You can check out the Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask Sheets which are super affordable yet they work! You can see in the photo below how the 18 variants (Aloe, Acai berry, Bamboo, Broccoli, Cucumber, Coconut, Fig, Green Tea, Ginseng, Manuka honey, Lime, Oatmeal, Rice, Rose, Pomegranate, Shea Butter, Tea tree and Tomato) are categorized into three textures: water, essence, and cream.
Be sure to pick the solution that is right for your skin type. You can choose either the refreshing water type or even the moisturizing essence type. If your skin is not too oily or sensitive, you can even use the rich cream types. But this works mostly for normal to dry skin, so it’s best to just stick with water and essence types.
Out of the 18 available, my favorite is Rose (see picture above) which has a refreshing water-type formula. It’s enriched with hydrating and brightening ingredients extracted from fragrant roses and other flowers that leave my skin moisturized, smooth and radiant after using it for just 20 minutes.
Plus, it smells so good that I almost always don’t want to take it off. That’s why I always leave it on my face for the maximum allowed time of 20 minutes before removing it. Then, it probably takes me another 10 minutes to gently pat my face to let the remaining formula be fully absorbed by my skin. All the while basking in the fragrant rose smell of the formula.
Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask Sheet Types
While it’s so inviting to use a face sheet mask every day, it’s not recommended at all, even if it has natural ingredients. Treat yourself to this experience twice a week only, or just once per week if you have sensitive skin. Some brands do contain ingredients that can end up clogging your pores and cause irritation if you use them too often.
That’s why you really need to choose brands that you can truly depend on and already tested and trusted by the experts.
Best Korean Sheet Mask for Glowing Skin
For special occasions like weddings and parties, I bet you want to have a healthy and glowing skin. When your skin is oily, it can’t be considered as glowing or luminous. So if you have oily skin, it can be a little frustrating. But, wanting to hide oily skin doesn’t mean you can’t have glowing skin.
Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Creamy Mask
At times like this, you should treat yourself to a high-quality mask like Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Creamy Mask. It has ginseng as its core ingredient that’s why it’s super effective in making the skin firmer and younger-looking.
You also get a more luminous, clear and radiant skin. The most important thing is that it works on oily skin! You get a really smooth and moisturized skin without aggravating your sebum-producing oil glands.
I know that it’s a bit expensive, but once you experience it, you’ll understand why it’s priced like that. When you think about the benefits you get from using it, you’ll think that it’s even affordable. It’s like experiencing an all-in, expensive facial treatment at your favorite face spa. This is a true value for your money!
The box contains 5 sheets, so you can share some with your friends. Or, just keep them for future use. You can use it once a month to indulge your skin to a luxurious 30-minute treatment. But if you can afford it, then why not make it your regular face mask to use twice a week?
Can You Use A Clay Face Mask Everyday?
Clay face masks are the real deal (that’s not to say that face sheet mask is fake) when it comes to effectiveness. It’s like a choice between a long warm bath and a quick shower.
Clay masks are more versatile and potent because of the clay itself. It helps your skin absorb all the benefits of the other ingredients better.
Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask
Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask 2x is a popular clay face mask for oily skin because it’s a true miracle in a jar. It’s infused with double the amount of Jeju volcanic clusters as compared with the regular Volcanic Pore Clay mask, so it’s specially formulated for oily skin. A 10-in-1 pore-clearing solution that addresses many troublesome pore problems that oily-skinned gals have.
This Korean clay mask is one of my personal favorites. It effectively absorbs and removes excess sebum, gives a really deep cleansing, tightens pores, exfoliates dead skin cells, removes blackheads, brightens, firms and enhances skin tone. The formula is easy to spread on the face, but I usually mix a little bit of distilled water with it to make the step a lot easier.
After 10 to 15 minutes, I wash it off gently and thoroughly. Immediately after using it, my face is super smooth and feels really clean. It also doesn’t leave me with a super tight and dry face that makes even blinking hard.
Why wouldn’t you want to use this clay mask regularly when it has this many benefits, right?
Still, using a clay or mud mask daily is a big no-no. For the same reason as a face sheet mask earlier, using it every day can irritate and harm your skin. Again, you can use it 2 times per week only. Do it three times a week only if your skin can handle it. As we all have different skin textures and conditions, you should always test a product until you get what your skin wants.
